About the Artist

About the artist...hey, that's me! Having read a lot of these "about the artist" pages on the internet, there seems to be some sort of rule that they be written in third-person. Maybe it's supposed to sound like someone else is telling the story, but I suspect that most of the time the artist is the one who has actually written the text. So I'm going to break tradtion here and talk about myself. :-)

I am originally from San Diego, California. But since 1985, I have lived in Wilton, which is not too far from Sacramento. I grew up on a ranch of sorts. I guess you could say we were yuppie ranchers, but that didn't matter much to me. It was an awesome place to grow up, and I wish I still had all those trails I used to ride on!

I've been nuts about horses all my life, and got my first horse, Thunder, when I was 13 years old. I now have Guinevere (Morgan/Shire), and Shylah (Canadien). You can see them on my other site, Random Rosecombs. Certainly for most of my life, horses have been my favorite subject matter--I love their grace and beauty and all those other cliches, and their utter dorkiness as well. To own a horse is to know a critter with a sense of humor.

And for some reason, I got into chickens in a big way. I still remember, I saw a little Old English pullet at the Nevada County Fair when I was seven years old, and I decided I wanted some of those fancy chickens. At that time I couldn't join 4-H until I was nine, so I impatiently waited. I started out going to little fairs with two chickens. Now I show all over the state, ship birds all over the country, have developed some new colors in the Rosecomb breed, and won my first ever Best in Show at an open show in March of 2002.

But enough about that, what about art? Well see, I can't explain the art without telling you a little about other aspects of my life too! I have been drawing ever since I could, and have wanted to be an artist ever since I understood the concept. I graduated with a BA in Studio Art from the University of California at Davis in June of 2001. I still work there at least once a week in the lithography studio. I dabbled in all the art stuff I could during college, but I seem to have settled into drawing and printmaking. I do miss sculpting though sometimes. I spent two years working for the American Poultry Association on the book called The American Standard of Perfection, and I think I can now safely say I specialize in poultry art... but also horses and pet portraits. I'm not sure where exactly I'll end up in life, but I intend to enjoy the journey, and not ever give up on this crazy art thing. I've had artwork accepted into several prestigious juried shows and I've done several art booths in various places, and I'm certainly keeping busy enough to stay out of trouble. :-)

To my clients and fans (past, present, and future)...thank you. And to the few and far between who truly "get it," you mean a lot to me!

Thank you for looking at my website!
